The meltdown came after Anthropic's ads promoted Claude without directly naming ChatGPT or OpenAI. Altman insisted OpenAI "would obviously never run ads in the way Anthropic depicts them" and claimed users would reject such tactics.
Anthropic was founded in 2021 by ex-OpenAI executives who reportedly left over AI safety disagreements. The company didn't mention OpenAI by name in their Super Bowl campaign, but that didn't stop Altman from taking the bait.
